Amazon soy pact collapse may drive 1.4M hectares of deforestation

A voluntary soy deforestation pact has collapsed after nearly two decades of success. This collapse is predicted to cause significant future deforestation in the Amazon rainforest. Researchers estimate over one million hectares of forest loss by 2036. This deforestation will release substantial carbon emissions equivalent to Canada’s annual output. Aggressive enforcement and stronger import demands are now recommended to protect the Amazon.
