Can Old Monk be sold as rum? FSSAI, manufacturer lock horns in Bombay high court

Old Monk’s maker says Maharashtra has reportedly lost around Rs 350 crore in excise revenue since FSSAI restricted sales of rum from its Khopoli unit, and that its own losses top Rs 500 crore. FSSAI says the spirit can’t be sold simply as “rum” if it uses added flavouring, and wants a “rum-like” label. The Bombay high court, which refused interim relief, will hear the matter again on October 23.
