China stretches its sea legs in the maritime sphere

China has traditionally been a land power and, despite its rhetoric of owning the South China Sea “since ancient times”. It has only recently started projecting power in maritime areas beyond its coastline. Indeed, the first People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) circumnavigation of the globe only occurred in 2002.
