Google engineer quits ‘amazing’ job over AI, says ASI doom is not inevitable

Google DeepMind engineer Robert O’Callahan has resigned, saying AI progress is “far too rapid” and that his chip design work was making AI cheaper and faster. His exit comes as Google prepares to test its TPUs in space under Project Suncatcher. Unlike other recent AI safety resignations, he doesn’t predict certain doom, calling the risk of superintelligence “real but uncertain” and chasing it irresponsible.
