How family tragedy shaped Lamine Yamal’s remarkable journey to football stardom

Lamine Yamal’s rise to winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup is inseparable from the story of the family that built him. His mother Sheila Ebana was 16 when she gave birth to him. His father Mounir, a Moroccan immigrant, worked construction and street jobs to stay afloat. His grandmother Fátima crossed from Morocco to Spain alone, undocumented, and worked three jobs to bring her children over. His father survived a life-threatening stabbing in August 2024. Yamal’s name itself honours two strangers who helped his parents financially before he was born. This is the full human story behind the boy who hugged his little brother on a World Cup pitch in New Jersey.
