‘Memory of the world’: Rajatarangini, Mahabharata & Arthashastra get UN recognition

Three significant works from India’s literary heritage have been added to Unesco’s Memory of the World Regional Register. Kalhana’s ‘Rajatarangini’, the ‘Mahabharata’, and Kautilya’s ‘Arthashastra’ received this recognition recently. These inscriptions reflect various aspects of India’s intellectual traditions, including historical writing and governance. This announcement follows India’s previous regional register recognitions in 2024 for other literary works. The initiative aims to preserve and digitise India’s manuscript heritage for future generations.
