Sam Altman isn’t happy that Anthropic asked religious scholars if Claude is conscious

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says he is very uncomfortable with people ascribing religious force to AI models, calling it a real safety issue. His X post follows a New York Times report that Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah hosted religious scholars and philosophers to shape Claude’s morals and discuss AI consciousness. Microsoft and Google DeepMind voices have also pushed back, while Pope Leo XIV has dismissed machine consciousness altogether.
