California acquires 640 acres to protect Joshua trees and future habitat

California has acquired 640 acres of western Joshua tree habitat northwest of Pioneertown in San Bernardino County, securing land that researchers identify as highly likely to remain suitable for the species in the future. The newly acquired property sits northwest of Pioneertown, in a desert region where western Joshua trees form an important part of the landscape. The acquisition covers 640 acres and was completed by CDFW on August 24 using money from the Western Joshua Tree Conservation Fund.
