Historic California racetrack could become waterfront park in $175m plan

Golden Gate Fields, a 161-acre former racetrack near Berkeley, could be transformed into a major waterfront public park. California lawmakers have proposed $125 million in state funding to help purchase and preserve the site. The plan would connect several existing parks and open spaces, improve public access for pedestrians and cyclists, and turn the property into a large recreational area after 83 years of horse racing.
