UIDAI announces new SOP for changing name on Aadhaar, here’s what you need to know

UIDAI has introduced a revised Standard Operating Procedure for updating names in Aadhaar that began on September 18, 2026. The updated rules categorize name changes into minor and major with specific documentation requirements. Minor corrections can be made with standard proof of identity while significant changes need a Gazette Notification. Individuals can generally update their Aadhaar name twice before needing further approval.
